If you are a big fan of aviation history, a must see while you stay at the Chateau Lacombe is the Aviation Museum, located just a 5-minute walk from the inn. Many of our guests have agreed that a visit the museum is a must when it comes to understanding the history of Canada’s contribution in aviation.

The museum hangar is one of the remaining hosts of the ’double-double’ Second World War British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. For aviation fanatics, that is a big deal in conserving what’s left of the double-long, double-wide hangars that were built in the 1940s.

With the help of many dedicated donors and volunteers, the museum has a collection of 20 aircraft, some which were restored from the ground-up. The museum is also richly filled with collections of aviation stories of Edmonton and Northern Alberta.

Hundreds of men and women have taken flight from that very museum’s hangar in the past - flying everything from bombers, biplanes, and bush planes, as well as jets. Exhibits and displays from the museum will allow you to step back in simple time and see first-hand how the aviation community thrived and brought about the bustling growth of the city.

There’s something for everyone, whether you’re young or old - with programs that will enrich your knowledge about aviation heritage. You and your family can explore the living experience of the many activities on site from the flight simulators, taking a lot of many of the personal artifacts of pilots, viewing the aircraft restoration area, and going into a simulated cockpit of a Cold War jet fighter.

When you stay at the Chateau Lacombe, you are literally within an arm’s length from the museum, so be sure to plan a visit during your stay with us. You will certainly enjoy your time there.
